Cake Doughnuts
Heat oil 1 cm thick in a frying pan to 375F.

Beat with a mixer:
2/3 c sugar
4 beaten eggs
1/3 c milk
1/3 c shortening

Add:
1 tbsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Add:
3.5 c flour

Mix and knead until ingredients are well combined.  Roll out on a floured board until about 1 cm thick.  Cut into doughnut shapes.  (A glass or a jar lid works well for the outer hole and a pop bottle top or one half of a tea ball works for the hole.)  Fry until the bottom side is browned (about the color of coffee with cream.)  Turn and fry the other side.  Drain extra oil off, either on paper towels or on a rack.  If desired, coat doughnuts in powdered sugar while hot.

Notes:  Homemade doughnuts are soooo much better than storebought doughnuts.  They're also really good hot.
